Program Overview

Aix-Marseille University (AMU) is located in Aix-en-Provence, a city of about 150,000 inhabitants in the South of France, between the Mediterranean Sea and the French Alps. The city of Aix-en-Provence is famous for its music festivals, fountains and a pleasant sunny climate. Cezanne's paintings immortalize the beautiful countryside of this region.

AMU enrolls 77,000 students including 10,000 international students, and has plenty of experience working with international students.

At AMU, you can take courses taught in French or English in business, political science and international relations.
Explore AMU courses taught partially or completely in English.

Students from all French levels can also enroll in the French Language & Culture program at the French Language Center called the SUFLE (see below).
Students with an intermediate to advanced level of French can design a full course load of university courses in French from the following fields:

Political science (Sciences Po-Aix)
International relations (Sciences Po-Aix)

Students should note that they must seek approval in advance if they wish to take courses from multiple departments. Early planning is recommended!

IMPORTANT! AMU requires all applicants have completed a minimum of one semester (and ideally two semesters) of university level French prior to participating, even if you intend to take all courses taught in English. You will find you need to speak and read French outside the classroom in order to participate fully in everyday life.

**AMU will not consider applications from students with zero French language proficiency.
Students applying to SUFLE are expected to have completed FR101 at a minimum before participating on the program.**

The French Language & Culture program (SUFLE) is an excellent option for students at all French language levels!
Students take courses alongside other international students at their language level. This fully immersive program focuses on French conversation and phonetics and also gives students the opportunity to participate in thematic workshops such as: Business French, French History, French Cinema, etc.

Each semester offers 20 hours of class per week, awarding an AMU Diploma (D.U. of French Language & Culture) and 30 ECTS credits (15 US credits).

Thinking of participating on this exchange in fall semester?
The French language & culture program (SUFLE) finishes before the Christmas break.
Courses offered in the Faculty of Humanities (ALLSH) - Arts, Humanities, Languages, Social Sciences - don't end until mid January and students on these courses are required to remain at AMU until mid-January. We recommend you apply for the spring semester exchange if you want to take courses offered in the Faculty of Humanities.

  • A wide range of courses available taught in French for students with suitable level of French language proficiency
  • French language and culture courses offered for all levels of French ability from beginners up
  • A safe and welcoming campus environment
