Planning Your Exchange
The National Student Exchange website is the place to start your search for the ideal exchange location.

Log-in as a UK student and click on 'Explore More All Campuses' to find information on all the NSE schools available to you, their location, campus description and available areas of study.

You can also zoom in on the map to identify NSE member institutions in a particular region of the USA.

We recommend you focus on finding the institution that will best fulfill your academic requirements rather than choosing a school or state based solely on its location. Most of us would pick Hawaii, California or the Virgin Islands given the choice but are the courses offered at those schools going to keep you on track to graduate on time?!

Pay careful attention to the information regarding;

  • chance of placement*
  • the cost of room and board
  • housing availability and housing contract obligations
  • whether the school runs on the semester or quarter system
  • closed or restricted academic programs.

*At the top right hand side of each school's page on the NSE website you'll see Chance of Placement. This tells you how competitive the school is.

Excellent = accepts nearly all (96%+) qualified applicants
Very Good = accepts 76 - 95% of qualified applicants
Good = accepts 50 - 75% of qualified applicants
Limited = accepts less than 50% of qualified students

If your first choice school is Limited, make sure your second, third and fourth choices are Excellent or Very Good.

Specific limitations are outlined in the campus description in the NSE Directory. Read the campus descriptions carefully to find out if the school:

  • accepts Home Payment (Plan B) students. UK operates Home Payment only. Host Payment (Plan A) exchanges are NOT available to UK students.
  • has majors closed to exchange students
  • has on-campus housing, or requires you to live on campus
  • requires meal plan purchase
  • has duration limitations etc.

It’s your responsibility to do this research on each school you choose. Course enrollment in restricted programs is absolutely not guaranteed.

Choosing Your Exchange Duration
You must follow any duration restrictions listed in the school description. There are a few which require a full year exchange. Some schools won't accept NSE students for spring semester only. When possible, NSE students are encouraged to exchange for a full academic year.

Semester Schools: You can exchange for one semester or a full year.

Quarter Schools: Credits received at a quarter school are converted to semester credits as follows: number of quarter credits x .67. We recommend you select the full year exchange for a quarter system school.

Understanding Possible Limitations
Some institutions have certain kinds of "unofficial" limitations that may not be included in the NSE Directory. For example:
1. Some schools have a limited number of students they can accept on exchange. Therefore, the number of UK students who can be accepted is limited.
2. Some schools may only be listed as first choice schools (because they are so popular) and are not good 2nd, 3rd or 4th choices. Schools in Hawaii, Florida and
California fill very quickly. If you put a school in one of these states as your first choice, select a school in another state (that's not Hawaii, Florida or
   California) as your second choice.
3. Some schools have very limited availability on the Home (Plan B) Payment option.

Academic Credit

With more than 160 member institutions, the NSE exchange offers a very wide variety of areas of study. Use the 'All Programs of Study' function on the NSE search engine to find schools offering courses in your major.

Remember - you don't have to limit yourself to major courses. You can also choose courses that fulfill electives or subjects you're interested in which aren't offered at UK.

You will earn transfer credit from the NSE Exchange University. For all successfully completed courses, the credit hours, course title and course equivalency will be indicated on the UK transcript. You must complete the coursework during this program according to the established guidelines by the NSE Exchange University.

The grades earned will be important to progression in future academic endeavors, including graduate or professional school; however the grades earned will NOT be indicated on the UK transcript. For more information visit the UK Education Abroad Academic Credit website.

  • PRIOR to participating on this program, you must obtain confirmation of the UK equivalents for the courses you plan to take at your NSE host institution. The UK NSE Coordinator will provide you with instructions on how to obtain these equivalents.
  • Upon completion of the term abroad, the NSE host institution transcript should be sent to the UK Admissions office. Once received, UK Admissions will facilitate the transfer of credits to UK. IMPORTANT! It is your responsibility to arrange for your NSE host institution transcript to be mailed to UK at the end of your program program.
  • All students will be enrolled in NES 333 at UK during their term on exchange. This will keep you enrolled in full time status at UK while you are on exchange. There is an online course associated with NES 333 which is completed on Canvas during the NSE exchange term.

Housing & Meals

With more than 160 institutions available the housing options vary widely from one school to another. Some schools require on-campus housing while others offer the choice between on-campus and off-campus accommodation. In most cases the student will be responsible for organizing their own off-campus housing.

The information on housing and meal plan options and costs is provided on the institution's program page on the NSE website. Scroll down to the text box midway down the page and click on the 'Room/Meals' tab.

Student Life
The program page for each institution on the NSE website also includes a link to their own website. Go there to learn more about the school and the student activities offered on and off campus.

Program Costs

With more than 160 schools located in the continental USA plus Puerto Rico, Guam, The US Virgin Islands and Canada it's inevitable that costs and cancellation policies will vary by school.

While the Program Cost and Budget information page provides a guide to the type of costs involved in participation you must use the cost information provided on the individual NSE institution program pages to determine the particular costs associated with that specific location.
