UK Exchange: The University of Manchester

Manchester, England, Britain

Program Overview

This exchange is not currently accepting applications for 2019-20.
Please check out our other British exchange options at Swansea University, Lancaster University, University of Leeds, and the University of Sussex.

The University of Manchester (UM) is one of Great Britain's most famous civic universities with a rich heritage of cutting edge innovation and enterprise stretching back almost 200 years.

Located in the heart of the world’s first modern industrial city, UM was created in 2004 by the amalgamation of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. After 100 hundred years of working closely together both institutions agreed to form a single university, and in October 2004 they officially combined to form the largest single-site university in the UK.

According to the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities, the University of Manchester is the 35th best university in the world, the seventh best in Europe and the fifth best in the UK.

To learn more about life in Manchester, both at the university and in the city, check out UM's Living in Manchester guidebook.

Courses and credits
Explore the University of Manchester online course unit catalog.

At the University of Manchester:
Course = Major
Unit = Course/class

Select the Course (major) you are interested in to see syllabi for the individual units (classes) offered in that Course.

The majority of course units at The University of Manchester are worth either 10 or 20 credits. As a general rule, one UM credit equates to 10 hours of work; a 10-credit course unit therefore requires 100 hours of study on average. Students should note that the number of credits associated with a course does not relate to the number of contact hours (lectures, tutorials etc) a week as is the case at University of Kentucky.

As a guide for University of Kentucky students:
10 Manchester credits  = 3 US credits
20 Manchester credits = 5 US credits

Students generally enroll in their units before arrival at University of Manchester, although you may not be completely enrolled until after arrival.

  • Live and learn alongside other international students from more than 160 countries
  • An hour from Liverpool by road and 2 hours from London by train
  • Home to the world's most famous soccer (football) team, Manchester United

This program is open to undergraduate students from all academic disciplines.
Students must possess a valid passport at the time of application to this program.

Academic Credit

Students will earn transfer credit from the Exchange University. For all successfully completed courses, the credit hours, course title and course equivalency will be indicated on the UK transcript. Students must complete the coursework during this program according to the established guidelines by the Exchange University. The grades earned will be important to progression in future academic endeavors, including graduate or professional school; however the grades earned will NOT be indicated on the UK transcript. For more information visit the UK Education Abroad Academic Credit website.

  • PRIOR to participating on this program, students must complete an Academic Approval Form (AAF). The AAF indicates how the course will be used, or course equivalency, once they are transferred back to UK. Instructions on how to complete the AAF are included in application materials.
  • Upon completion of the term abroad, the transcript should be sent to the UK Education Abroad office. Once received, Education Abroad staff will facilitate the transfer of credits to UK.
  • All students will be enrolled in EAP 599: Study Abroad (1 credit hour) at UK during their term abroad.

Housing & Meals

Students attending UM on exchange for an academic year are guaranteed a room in University-owned accommodation. Students attending UM on exchange for one semester, although not guaranteed accommodation, will almost certainly be allocated University accommodation under normal circumstances.

UM offers a variety of accommodation types from modern self-catering flats (apartments) to traditional halls of residence with meal plan. Click here for more information on accommodation options at the University of Manchester, and click here for more information about the cost of living at the University of Manchester.
