UK Exchange: University Paris Diderot - Paris 7

Program Overview

UK students studying Linguistics within the College of Arts & Sciences have the opportunity to take classes in one of the most prestigious universities in the world. Situated in the heart of Paris, Université Paris Diderot is the only multidisciplinary university in the French capital to offer a wide range of degrees in the Humanities, Medicine and the Sciences.

The campus is located in the 13th district (13eme arrondissement) of Paris in the Paris Rive Gauche neighborhood, and is easily accessible by tram, RER, metro and buses. 

Language Requirements
Applicants are not required to demonstrate French language ability to be considered for participation in this exchange program provided the courses chosen are taught in English (Etudes Anglophones).
Students who want to study exclusively in English may also take French as a Second Language (FLE) courses.

Students wanting to take courses taught in French must demonstrate a minimum French language proficiency of B2 level according to the Common European Framework for Reference for Languages (European Language Levels - self assessment grid). This is equivalent to 4 - 5 semesters of college level French.


French refresher courses at the University Paris Diderot
It's possible to follow two types of development of the French language at the University Paris Diderot.
The Intensive Course Language and Civilisation (SILC), which takes place at the beginning of semesters 1 and 2 offers intensive training in French. The semester course offers general language courses, grammar, culture.

Highlights

  • Enroll in courses that are not covered at UK, including Discourse Analysis, Intonation, Psycholinguistics, Corpora in Generative Linguistics, Language and its Interfaces, Phonetics for Varieties of English, and Semantics & Pragmatics.
  • All exchange students enrolled at Paris Diderot also have access to all courses at University of Paris, including Paris 8, which is also a linguistics stronghold.
  • Study and live in one of the cultural centers of the world, while taking classes and living alongside local and international students.


Eligibility
This program is open to undergraduate students in the Linguistics department of the College of Arts & Sciences.
Students must possess a valid passport at the time of application to this program.

Academic Credit

Students will earn transfer credit from Paris Diderot. For all successfully completed courses, the credit hours, course title and course equivalency will be indicated on the UK transcript. Students must complete the coursework during this program according to the established guidelines by Paris Diderot. The grades earned will be important to progression in future academic endeavors, including graduate or professional school; however the grades earned will NOT be indicated on the UK transcript.   • PRIOR to participating on this program, students must complete an Academic Approval Form (AAF). The AAF indicates how the course will be used, or course equivalency, once they are transferred back to UK. Instructions on how to complete the AAF are included in application materials.
  • Upon completion of the term abroad, the transcript should be sent to the UK Education Abroad office. Once received, Education Abroad staff will facilitate the transfer of credits to UK.
  • All students will be enrolled in EAP 599: Study Abroad (1 credit hour) at UK during their term abroad.

 

Housing & Meals

The International Office of Paris Diderot (Bureau des Relations Internationales de Paris-Diderot, or BRI) will help you to reserve a single occupancy room in one of the Paris student residences managed by the CROUS (Centre régional des œuvres universitaires et scolaires).

For more information on accommodation in Paris please visit the Living in Paris page on the Paris Diderot website. Students are responsible for all meals during the duration of the term abroad and CROUS offers a variety of places to eat at reasonable prices.

Student Life
International students have many opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities as there are more than 50 student organizations available in Paris.
