Program Description:

UK Education Abroad: Rotation Scholarship

Scholarship Overview

UK Education Abroad offers a competitive scholarship for professional healthcare rotation students participating on for-credit education abroad rotations throughout the academic year. The UK Education Abroad Rotation Scholarship is funded by students for students, demonstrating the support for international academic experiences at UK. The UK Education Abroad Rotation Scholarship is awarded one time per year for each college based on college-specific deadlines. This scholarship is intended to be just one component of a student’s comprehensive strategy for funding education abroad experiences.

College of Medicine - Must have all items completed and turned in by April 1st of the year prior to their rotation. For example, if you will be completing an FM853 rotation in spring 2020 your scholarship application must be completed by April 1st, 2019.

College of Pharmacy - Must have all items completed and turned in by October 1st of the year prior to their rotation. For example, if you are eligible to complete a rotation in spring 2019, fall 2019, or spring 2020, your scholarship application must be completed by October 1st, 2018. If you are eligible to complete a rotation in spring 2020, fall 2020, or spring 2021, your scholarship application must be completed by October 1st, 2019.

All other students participating in rotations outside of these two colleges, or participating in the FM815/825 program, should apply to the general UK Education Abroad Scholarship. Deadlines will follow undergraduate scholarship cycles.

The Scholarship Review Committee, comprised of faculty and staff from across campus, considers the following criteria when reviewing applications:

  • Academic Merit: In addition to GPA, academic merit can be demonstrated via difficulty of course load, engagement in research, internships, co-curricular activities, pre-professional organizations, etc.
  • Personal Background: This application will ask students to provide information on things such as previous international travel experience, whether or not they identify as a first-generation student, a racial/ethnic minority, religious minority, veteran, etc.
  • Academic Purpose: Strong scholarship applicants will be able to demonstrate how their chosen education abroad program will serve to further their academic and/or career goals. Statements such as, “I’ve always wanted to see the Eiffel Tower!” might not be well received by the review committee.
  • Faculty Recommendation: As a major component of the application, the faculty recommendation should demonstrate a strong endorsement of the student and their goals for an international program.

Rotation students submitting this application will be competing for the UK Education Abroad Scholarship with undergraduates and other graduate and professional students intending to study abroad during the same term.

Award Amount:

The scholarship award amount is $1500. Scholarships will be awarded based on committee scores and will be distributed in the order of highest score to lowest score so long as funds allow. Students are not guaranteed to be awarded a scholarship.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, applicants must be:

  • A University of Kentucky degree-seeking student
  • Applying for an education abroad program for academic credit
  • In good academic standing with the University of Kentucky
Applicants are ineligible to apply if the student is any of the following:
  • A non-UK student
  • A non-degree seeking student
  • Applying for a program not for credit
  • Not in good academic standing with the University of Kentucky
In order to be considered for a UK Education Abroad Scholarship, students must complete the following by the scholarship deadline:
  • Rotation Scholarship Application (click “apply here” at the top of this page)
  • Letter of Recommendation Form (available online after you’ve begun this scholarship application)
  • Education Abroad Rotation Registration Started

NOTE: A student's scholarship application must be for the same term as their UK Education Abroad program application.

Students who have not applied for a for-credit education abroad program (in addition to this scholarship application) will not be eligible for the UK Education Abroad Scholarship. Meaning, it is not possible to wait and see if a scholarship is awarded before selecting a program on which to participate.

Scholarship Disbursement

This scholarship will not be issued in the form of cash and will not be disbursed until the term in which the student is enrolled in credit for their education abroad program. If a student is receiving credit in the spring, but traveling in the summer, you are required to apply for the spring scholarship. UKEA cannot distribute funds if you are not registered for a course related to your education abroad program.

  • Professional student awards are disbursed to the UK student account at the time of travel but retroactively applied to the term in which academic credit related to the program is earned.

Once disbursed, the scholarship will pay off any outstanding student account balance first and the remainder will be issued to the student via direct deposit. In many instances, UK EA scholarships are awarded after a student will have made purchases relating to their international program (i.e. program deposits, flights, housing, etc.), thus the scholarship may serve as a form of reimbursement for the amount awarded. Because of this, UK EA highly recommends that students do not rely solely on scholarship funds as the form of payment for program and related fees.
