Program Description:

UK Consortia: KIIS Summer - Experience Spain (May) (KIIS)

Segovia, Spain

Program Overview

The KIIS two-week program in Segovia, Spain exposes students to Spanish culture and history by offering courses that are part of the General Education offerings for colleges and universities throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky and surrounding states. Courses are taught in English, and classes are held five days a week for four hours.

Segovia is a beautiful provincial capital set in the foothills of the Guadarrama Mountains. The city has a visible history that dates back to pre-Roman times. Segovia's 1st-century aqueduct is a living lesson on art and history. Its majestic cathedral was the last Gothic structure built in Spain, and the Alcázar, the fortress/castle, sits like the prow of an imaginary ship against the background of blue Segovia skies. Segovia also offers a weekly open-air market, picturesque plazas and cafes, a lively nightlife and frequent cultural events.

Only 60 miles north of Madrid, Segovia's location makes it ideal for individual and group excursions. The program includes one-day excursions to Toledo, Salamanca,
Ávila and Madrid.

Scholarships are available for this program from KIIS and UK Education Abroad. Visit this link to learn more.

Highlights

  • Live with a Spanish family
  • Group activities and excursions
  • Opportunity for independent travel on weekends

Eligibility

This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all academic disciplines. No Spanish is required (all instruction is in English). Students with some language proficiency may be able to improve their knowledge of Spanish culture as well as their speaking skills through interactions with their homestay family and local people.

Academic Credit

Students will earn transfer credit from Western Kentucky University. For all successfully completed courses, the credit hours, course title and course equivalency will be indicated on the UK transcript. Students must complete the coursework during this program according to the established guidelines by WKU. The grades earned will be important to progression in future academic endeavors, including graduate or professional school; however the grades earned will NOT be indicated on the UK transcript. For more information visit the UK Education Abroad Academic Credit website.

  • PRIOR to participating on this program, students must complete an Academic Approval Form (AAF). The AAF indicates how the course will be used, or course equivalency, once they are transferred back to UK. Instructions on how to complete the AAF are included in application materials.
  • Upon completion of the term abroad, the transcript should be sent to the UK Education Abroad office. Once received, Education Abroad staff will facilitate the transfer of credits to UK.
  • All students will be enrolled in EAP 599: Study Abroad (1 credit hour) at UK during their term abroad.

Housing & Meals

A key feature of the two-week Spain-May program is that all students live with carefully chosen Spanish families in Segovia. This affords students the opportunity to experience the culture of daily life in Spain. Generally, no more than two or three students will be placed with each family. All meals are taken with the host family, who will also provide towels, bed linens, and laundry facilities. Most families live in or near the city center and relatively close to our classroom building, the Centro KIIS, which is located in the beautiful and historic Plaza Mayor of Segovia. For more information, please visit the KIIS webpage.

Program Costs
