The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, better known as UC3M is ranked among the top 50 universities worldwide less than 50 years old.

It is a truly international institution, hosting more than 4000 international students, and offers a wide range of course work in both English and Spanish. This is an excellent program for students with some Spanish language experience but who are also looking for course work offered in English.

Take a 2 minute video tour of UC3M (select subtitles option).

Check out the UC3M Facebook page for incoming international students.

UC3M has a very informative English language website designed specifically for international exchange students. Click on 'Click to Visit' next to Partner Website above to learn more about UC3M.

Want to go to UC3M for fall semester but worried about their end date?
Although the fall semester at UC3M does not officially end until late January, UK students attending for fall semester only will be able to take final exams in the week before Christmas and return home in time for the start of UK's spring semester.

Spring semester end date
Your official UC3M admission letter will show a spring semester end date of June 30. Exams actually finish around June 1 and you are only required to remain at UC3M until the end of June if you need to re-sit any of your exams.

Which UK requirements can I fulfill by taking courses at UC3M?
In the last five years, UK students participating on this exchange program have taken courses that have fulfilled UK requirements in CS, ECO, FIN, ISC, JOU, MA, MAS, MGT, MKT and SPA.

Click here to explore the UC3M course catalog for more information.

PLEASE NOTE: UC3M does not offer Spanish language courses as part of its regular curriculum. They do offer a 2 US credit Spanish language course at extra cost for students interested in learning or improving their Spanish. This course is not included in the exchange benefits and you will be required to pay the tuition yourself.

  • Live and study in one of Europe's most dynamic capital cities

Academic Credit

Students will earn transfer credit from the Exchange University. For all successfully completed courses, the credit hours, course title and course equivalency will be indicated on the UK transcript. Students must complete the coursework during this program according to the established guidelines by the Exchange University. The grades earned will be important to progression in future academic endeavors, including graduate or professional school; however the grades earned will NOT be indicated on the UK transcript. For more information visit the UK Education Abroad Academic Credit website.

  • PRIOR to participating on this program, students must complete an Academic Approval Form (AAF). The AAF indicates how the course will be used, or course equivalency, once they are transferred back to UK. Instructions on how to complete the AAF are included in application materials.
  • Upon completion of the term abroad, the transcript should be sent to the UK Education Abroad office. Once received, Education Abroad staff will facilitate the transfer of credits to UK.
  • All students will be enrolled in EAP 599: Study Abroad (1 credit hour) at UK during their term abroad.

Housing & Meals

Students will receive information on accommodation options from UC3M after their application has been accepted. A choice of housing is available, including UC3M student residence dorms, off-campus shared flats, and homestays.
UC3M dorm options include room and board, and room only. Click here for more information.

As demand for on-campus accommodation greatly exceeds supply (especially for spring semester), UC3M cannot guarantee all applications will be successful. If your application for an on-campus dorm is unsuccessful, UC3M will assist you with the process of securing off-campus accommodation (most UK students choose to live off-campus in Madrid).

Students choosing to live off-campus will be responsible for all meals for the duration of their term abroad.

Student Life
Not only is UC3M located in the culturally rich and vibrant city of Madrid, the university itself provides a wealth of opportunities for student involvement and enrichment. Espacio Estudiantes is a program devoted specifically to helping you find your niche on campus. You can get involved in sports both on and off campus, recreationally and competitively, or you can join 2000 other runners in UC3M’s intercampus race.

UC3M offers a Buddy Program to help you prepare before you arrive and find your way around the campus and Madrid after you arrive.

The university’s Open Space arts program offers workshops and courses in dance, music, photography and art, and hosts frequent on-campus performances and exhibitions. The university’s Orientation and Social Work program offers counseling, peer tutoring and opportunities for charity work. When you’re not busy immersing yourself on campus, the city center is just a quick bus ride away and packed with top notch dining, entertainment, shopping, nightlife and some of the best art museums in the world.

Program Costs

Costs and cancellation policies vary by program. Please check the Program Cost and Budget information page for each semester. Be sure to consider the associated UK costs, program specifications, and related travel expenses.
