Program Overview

The Navarre region of Spain is a leader in the use of renewable energy, with 70 percent generated from renewable sources. This program is a collaboration between the University of Kentucky College of Engineering and Ingenio International in conjunction with the Association of Industrial Engineers of Navarre in Pamplona, Spain.Solar Tree

The course is eminently practical and the classes are complemented by tours of the most representative facilities in Navarre related to the course material. The classes will have a practical component based on the introduction, analysis and discussion of practical cases.


  • Combine classroom experiences with practical cases.
  • Understand the framework and current status of the renewable energy industry sector, with particular emphasis on public policy, economic and social differences between the Navarre region of Spain and the United States.
  • Analyze the different renewable technologies in order to implement them in different industrial and cultural settings.
  • Understand and evaluate the technical viability of new projects and the environmental effects of renewable energy projects.
  • Tour the most important technological centers in Navarre in order to observe practical installations.

This program is open to undergraduate students from all academic disciplines, but will be of particular interest to students in the College of Engineering.

Academic Credit

UK Faculty-Directed programs are conducted by University of Kentucky faculty and staff. UK GPA credits and grades will be awarded by the program director for the successful and timely completion of all required program activities and assignments, including any required on-campus meetings before or after the program's international travel.

  • Students will enroll in CME 599: Renewable Energies (6 credit hours).
    • This option incorporates a two-week, non-credit bearing, general Spanish Language and Culture course prior to the four-week Renewable Energies course. Students who prefer not to take the Spanish course should instead apply to the Option B - Short Apartment page.
  • All students will be enrolled in EAP 599: Study Abroad (1 credit hour).

Housing & Meals

Students will reside in shared apartments with a Spanish family, which include bed linens, blankets and towels, access to fully equipped kitchen and laundry, cleaning of common rooms, utilities (electricity, gas and water) up to certain expense.  Excess utility charges will be charged to the student. Students will have access to a shared kitchen, but will be responsible for the cost of all meals on their own.

Students may, for an additional fee, stay in a single room in a student residence instead.

Supplemental Materials
This program runs in collaboration with the University of Kentucky and Ingenio International. Students will complete an application with UK Education Abroad (online, this website) and supplemental materials with Ingenio. The supplemental application materials are for administrative purposes and will be provided to all accepted students AFTER the UK application deadline.
