Program Description:

Program Overview

Students will advance their Chinese language skills and learn about modern Chinese culture and society through this 4-week, intensive language and culture program at Shanghai University. Students will learn Chinese language in an immersion environment while living in the international dorm at Shanghai University, located at the center of Shanghai, one of the leading financial and cultural centers of the world.Shanghaitemple

Accompanied by UK Chinese faculty who are experts in their field, students will increase their language proficiency while deepening their understanding of China and its history.

Highlights

  • Multiple scholarships are available to all participants through the Confucius Institute and UK Education Abroad.
  • Learn Chinese inside and outside the classroom.
  • Learn about Chinese society and culture with UK faculty who are experts in Chinese studies.

  • Learn about China's past with excursions to nearby cities and important historic sites.

Eligibility

This program is open to undergraduate students from all academic disciplines. For more information on how to apply to the University of Kentucky as a visiting student, go to UK Admissions. Non-UK students should consult with the program director prior to applying to ensure that they have the proper academic background for the course.

Academic Credit

UK Faculty-Directed programs are conducted by University of Kentucky faculty and staff. UK GPA credits and grades will be awarded by the program director for the successful and timely completion of all required program activities and assignments, including any required on-campus meetings before or after the program's international travel.

  • Students will receive independent study credit for CHI 395/495G: Chinese Studies (6 credit hours).
    • In order to receive this credit, students will need to complete UK learning contracts. Please contact the Program Director for more information about this process.
  • All students will be enrolled in EAP 599: Study Abroad (1 credit hour).

Housing & Meals

Students will reside in an international residence hall at Shanghai University. Students will be responsible for the cost of all meals on their own.
