Program Description:

UK Exchange: Akita International University Summer
Akita City, Japan 

Program Overview

Akita International University was established in 2004 as a four-year liberal arts university located in the capital of Akita prefecture.

The AIU Summer Intensive Japanese Language Program provides opportunities for learners to improve their Japanese language skills in small classes alongside Japanese and other international students, as well as to deepen their understanding of Japan through culture workshops and field trips to local sites.
This program is designed for absolute beginners, beginning learners, and advanced beginning learners. It is NOT suitable for advanced learners.

Space on this program is very limited and the application will close as soon as available spaces are filled.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAM FEEParticipants on this program will be required to submit payment (by wire transfer) of the program fee by Friday, April 19, 2019. This payment covers the accommodation and bedding fee, mandatory meal fee, activity fee, mandatory Japanese health insurance fee, and a refundable deposit.
Do not apply for this program if you are not able to make payment by the AIU deadline on April 19, 2019.

Eligibility
This program is open to undergraduate students from all academic disciplines.
Applicants must have at least 1 full year of grades posted to their UK transcript at the time of application to this exchange program.
Students must possess a valid passport at the time of application to this program.

Academic Credit

Students will earn transfer credit from the Exchange University. For all successfully completed courses, the credit hours, course title and course equivalency will be indicated on the UK transcript. Students must complete the coursework during this program according to the established guidelines by the Exchange University. The grades earned will be important to progression in future academic endeavors, including graduate or professional school; however the grades earned will NOT be indicated on the UK transcript.   • PRIOR to participating on this program, students must complete an Academic Approval Form (AAF). The AAF indicates how the course will be used, or course equivalency, once they are transferred back to UK. Instructions on how to complete the AAF are included in application materials.
  • Upon completion of the term abroad, the transcript should be sent to the UK Education Abroad office. Once received, Education Abroad staff will facilitate the transfer of credits to UK.
  • All students will be enrolled in EAP 599: Study Abroad (1 credit hour) at UK during their term abroad.
Which UK requirements can I fulfill by taking courses at AIU?
In the last five years, UK students participating on this exchange program have taken courses that have fulfilled UK requirements in A&S, ECO, ENG, HIS, JPN, MCL, MGT, MKT, and PHI.

Housing & Meals

Summer Program students are assigned double rooms in AIU Summer School. Komachi Hall . Each student will have a chance to have a Japanese roommate and/or suitemate(s): a roommate is a student who shares a room and a bathroom, and a suitemate is a student who shares only a bathroom.

Specific room assignments and information about your roommate/ suitemate(s) will be announced upon your arrival. AIU is not able to provide the information such as name, nationality, and contact address of your roommate/ suitemate(s) in advance. AIU is not able to offer single rooms except in special circumstances because of limited room availability.

The program fee includes a meal plan at the Cafeteria, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner to residential students.
