For More Info, Contact: Established in 2004 as a four-year liberal arts university, Akita International University (AIU) is located in the capital of Akita prefecture in northern Japan.
It's about an hour's flight north from Tokyo.
Where is Akita exactly, and what does it look like? Take the video tour!
The big attraction for UK students is that ALL of AIU's undergraduate courses are taught in English. There is no Japanese language requirement but there is the opportunity to learn Japanese from scratch alongside your other classes if you choose.
As the name suggests AIU is a truly international institution hosting more than 160 exchange students from over 30 different countries. You'll be learning and living alongside fellow exchange students from around the world. All exchange students are guaranteed on-campus accommodation.
To better understand the Japanese way of life, AIU arranges community involvement projects and field trips to more rural areas. Another window onto Japanese traditional culture are the many festivals in the area, such as the Gannin Dance or Komachi Festival.
Important Note: Participants on this program are required to make a payment by wire transfer of approximately $1800 to AIU about 6 weeks before the program start date. This payment covers the accommodation and bedding fee, mandatory meal fee (for the first 2 weeks), activity fee, and mandatory Japanese health insurance fee. Please make sure you have the funds available to make this payment.

At AIU you can experience the best of both country and city life. The university’s rural location makes it a perfect starting point for hikes and exploration. The area is rich with natural beauty—from the summit of Mt. Chokai to the Tachimata Gorge waterfalls. Skiing is a popular local pastime, and you can also pay a visit to one of the area’s many hot springs year round.
For the athletic-minded, a public sports complex across the road from campus offers an all-purpose gymnasium, cycling paths and weight training rooms.
