Program Overview

Established in 2004 as a four-year liberal arts university, Akita International University (AIU) is located in the capital of Akita prefecture in northern Japan.
It's about an hour's flight north from Tokyo.

Where is Akita exactly, and what does it look like? Take the video tour!

The big attraction for UK students is that ALL of AIU's undergraduate courses are taught in English. There is no Japanese language requirement but there is the opportunity to learn Japanese from scratch alongside your other classes if you choose.

As the name suggests AIU is a truly international institution hosting more than 160 exchange students from over 30 different countries. You'll be learning and living alongside fellow exchange students from around the world. All exchange students are guaranteed on-campus accommodation.

To better understand the Japanese way of life, AIU arranges community involvement projects and field trips to more rural areas. Another window onto Japanese traditional culture are the many festivals in the area, such as the Gannin Dance or Komachi Festival.

Important Note: Participants on this program are required to make a payment by wire transfer of approximately $1800 to AIU about 6 weeks before the program start date. This payment covers the accommodation and bedding fee, mandatory meal fee (for the first 2 weeks), activity fee, and mandatory Japanese health insurance fee.                Please make sure you have the funds available to make this payment.

Which UK requirements can I fulfill by taking courses at AIU?
In the last five years, UK students participating on this exchange program have taken courses that have fulfilled UK requirements in A&S, ECO, ENG, HIS, JPN, MCL, MGT, MKT, and PHI.

Explore the AIU online course catalog for more information on their course offerings.

Academic Credit

Students will earn transfer credit from the Exchange University. For all successfully completed courses, the credit hours, course title and course equivalency will be indicated on the UK transcript. Students must complete the coursework during this program according to the established guidelines by the Exchange University. The grades earned will be important to progression in future academic endeavors, including graduate or professional school; however the grades earned will NOT be indicated on the UK transcript. For more information visit the UK Education Abroad Academic Credit website.

  • PRIOR to participating on this program, students must complete an Academic Approval Form (AAF). The AAF indicates how the course will be used, or course equivalency, once they are transferred back to UK. Instructions on how to complete the AAF are included in application materials.
  • Upon completion of the term abroad, the transcript should be sent to the UK Education Abroad office. Once received, Education Abroad staff will facilitate the transfer of credits to UK.
  • All students will be enrolled in EAP 599: Study Abroad (1 credit hour) at UK during their term abroad.

Housing & Meals

All international exchange students are guaranteed on-campus accommodation. Take a video tour of AIU's student dorms.
A meal plan is available to exchange students, and there are cafeterias on-campus.

Important Note: Participants on this program will be required to make a payment by wire transfer of approximately $1800 to AIU about 6 weeks before the program start date. This payment covers the accommodation and bedding fee, mandatory meal fee (for the first 2 weeks), activity fee, and mandatory Japanese health insurance fee. Please ensure you have the funds available to make this payment.

AIU is a smoke-free campus. No smoking is permitted on-campus, and there are no areas for smoking anywhere near campus.

Student Life

At AIU you can experience the best of both country and city life. The university’s rural location makes it a perfect starting point for hikes and exploration. The area is rich with natural beauty—from the summit of Mt. Chokai to the Tachimata Gorge waterfalls. Skiing is a popular local pastime, and you can also pay a visit to one of the area’s many hot springs year round.
For the athletic-minded, a public sports complex across the road from campus offers an all-purpose gymnasium, cycling paths and weight training rooms. If you’d rather spend a day absorbing local culture, you can take a bus into Akita City and visit a variety of museums devoted to local craftsmanship, science and fine arts.
