Located in northwest England, 20 miles from the coast and just 2 and a half hours from London by train, Lancaster University is a favorite destination for UK students looking  for a semester or academic year exchange to England.

Lancaster has excellent academic courses and teaching reputation, and you can take courses from over 30 Departments, as well having the opportunity to work independently on an undergraduate research project.

Lancaster University operates on the trimester system. For exchange purposes;
Michaelmas Term = UK fall semester.
Lent & Summer Terms = UK spring semester (UK students must participate for both terms).  

Which UK requirements can I fulfill by taking courses at Lancaster University?
In the last five years, UK students participating on this exchange program have taken courses that have fulfilled UK requirements in A-H, AST, BIO, COM, DIS, ECO, EE, ENG, FR, HIS, MA, MKT, NRE, PHI, PHY, PLS, PS, SOC, and STA.

Explore the online Lancaster University module catalog for more information on their course (called modules in England) offerings.

You should plan on taking 24 - 30 ECTS credits per semester.
24 ECTS = 12 UK credits
30 ECTS = 15 UK credits.

You will register for your modules AFTER arrival at Lancaster.

This program is open to undergraduate students from all academic disciplines. 
Students must possess a valid passport at the time of application to this program.

Students will be notified by the UK Exchanges Coordinator on how to access the Exchange University application AFTER their UK application has been approved.
Early application is recommended as places may fill before the official application deadline.

Academic Credit

Students will earn transfer credit from Lancaster University. For all successfully completed courses, the credit hours, course title and course equivalency will be indicated on the UK transcript. Students must complete the coursework during this program according to the established guidelines by Lancaster University. The grades earned will be important to progression in future academic endeavors, including graduate or professional school; however the grades earned will NOT be indicated on the UK transcript.   • PRIOR to participating on this program, students must complete an Academic Approval Form (AAF). The AAF indicates how the course will be used, or course equivalency, once they are transferred back to UK. Instructions on how to complete the AAF are included in application materials.
  • Upon completion of the term abroad, the transcript should be sent to the UK Education Abroad office. Once received, Education Abroad staff will facilitate the transfer of credits to UK.
  • All students will be enrolled in EAP 599: Study Abroad (1 credit hour) at UK during their term abroad.


Housing & Meals

All exchange students are guaranteed on-campus accommodation in a single study bedroom. Take a video tour of Lancaster University's on-campus accommodation options.
