Program Description:

UK Exchange: Heidelberg University

Heidelberg, Germany

Program Overview

Located in south west Germany on the banks of the River Neckar, the city of Heidelberg is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe.

Established in 1386, Universitat Heidelberg has consistently been ranked in the top three universities in Germany and the top 50 worldwide. It is a truly international institution with almost 20 per cent of the 31,000 student population coming from 130 different countries.

Take a video tour of the city and the university.

The language of instruction for most courses is German and applicants are required to demonstrate a minimum of four semesters of university level German by the time of participation.

A pre-semester intensive German program is included in the exchange benefits, and many UK students spend the first semester of their exchange in the University's International Study Center developing their German language proficiency.

See the Exchange Student Guide for lots more valuable information on the Heidelberg University exchange program

Choosing Courses
Heidelberg University does not publish information on course offerings for the coming semester until shortly before the start of that semester, and recommends students review the course catalog from previous semesters to gain a general overview of course offerings.

Student Life

Heidelberg University is saturated with history and culture, as is the surrounding city. Heidelberg possesses both a cosmopolitan and student-friendly atmosphere. With its charming, baroque Old Town, famous churches and the majestic Heidelberg Castle, it is regarded as one of Germany's most beautiful cities.

Immerse yourself in the Romantic era architecture, hike along the Philosopher’s Path, pop into an eatery for a traditional German meal, or spend the day at a museum and the night at a theatre. Heidelberg hosts numerous exciting festivals throughout the year, from the Ball der Vampire (Ball of the Vampires) in February to the Old Town Autumn Festival in September, which includes a Medieval Market, arts and crafts market and music ranging from Samba to rock ‘n’ roll.
